Newsletter 25th of January 2012

Dear Postgrads,
What a start to the year! I hope you’re all managing to keep cool somewhere within the university. We’ve now had two committee meetings, so event planning is in process as we speak! Also, I’ve started updating the website, and there is a new Facebook page, rather than group. I’d like it if you’d all like it! It’s called UWA Postgraduate Students' Association.
Our very first PSA event for the year will be the February Connect, on Thursday the 2nd starting at 5pm. Come along to the Uni Club balcony for some drinks and nibbles, and meet some of the committee! Unfortunately I won’t be able to join you this time, but I’ll be there in March.
We’ll also be at O’Day on the 24th of February, in an awesome PSA stall. Come meet us, enter our raffle and pick up some info about postgraduate things you can be involved in. If you’re part of a postgraduate run study group, collective or anything other UWA postgrad thing, we want to know about you! You’re also welcome to give us flyers or info to distribute from our stall at O’Day.
Since it is the time of year for milestones, make sure that you’re checking your UWA Student email for friendly reminders from the Graduate Research School. You should log on to Student Connect and check for yourself when your milestones are due. Go to Course & Unit on the side bar, and then click the link marked ‘Milestones’. You can see your due dates, and the status of the milestone. Once it is marked as Received, you can carry with your work without worry! If you have any questions about milestones, contact the Graduate Education Officers!
You may or may not have heard that the University is now able to charge a compulsory Amenities and Services fee to all enrolled students. This fee now goes to the University, not the Guild and is solely to fund services for students. You can find more info here: http://www.studentadmin.uwa.edu.au/welcome/fees/student_services__and__amenities_fee/what_amenities_and_services_are_provided_because_of_the_fee
As a result of this, the Guild has made membership free! You can choose to join through Student Connect, and access all the discounts and other perks of being a Guild member. You can ask for more details at Guild Reception.
A few more exciting things I want to make sure you know about:
Start this year, from Monday to Thursday during semester, the Reid Library will be open 24 hours! Any student at UWA will be able to use this library for as long as they want. More info on opening hours here: http://www.is.uwa.edu.au/about/opening-hours
We’re talking to Information Services about running a workshop on how to use the new search engine OneSearch. If you’d be interested in participating, please just email me at psa@guild.uwa.edu.au and I’ll keep you in the loop.
I’d also like people who were casual tutors in Arts (and any other Faculties) in Semester 2, 2011 if you’re having any trouble to get in touch with me, or your faculty rep.
I’m off on a study trip for three weeks, but I’ll still be in touch on email and Facebook and I look forward to meeting more lovely postgraduates soon!
