What do I mean by family? Check out the blog, I answered that question there (but if it’s tl;dr I mean anyone and everyone): http://uwapsa.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/family-picnic.html

Let me know you’re coming so I buy enough food to make you all fat. Email me at psa@guild.uwa.edu.au with how many people and any dietary requirements.
Also, no booze please.

Elections are coming, and I’m already getting nomination forms! I know a lot of amazing postgrads out there, and I’m serious when I say nominate for the committee! You need to email me the completed form by the 18th of October. See the website for further info: http://sponsored.uwa.edu.au/psa/elections_for_2013

Oh, and Connect is 5pm Thursday the 4th of October! Even better, the PSA sponsored performance of The Vagina Monologues is on 7.30pm on the 4th of October at Dolphin Theatre! (Go see it!)

Finally, I’ll be conferencing it up from the 3rd of October to the 12th, so I’m not available then, and will miss you all very much at Connect, the theatre, and Family Picnic – so take many, many pictures, send them to me, and make me jealous!

Take care, and happy reading!
Aisling

Family Picnic!

Oh my goodness, I am so excited about our 2012 Family Picnic! Do you know why? I just confirmed the presence of a koala!
It's not this one. But it'll look similar!
Why does the PSA do a family picnic? We know that no postgraduate is an island - there are a whole range of people who support you through your candidature. For some, it will be spouse and their children. For others their parents, or a romantic partner, or close friends, or a mentor. Family Picnic is a chance for us to celebrate these people, and thank them for all they do.

It's an opportunity for you to show off the beautiful Crawley campus to people who don't necessarily get to see it very often, and for the PSA to acknowledge that the postgraduate community is wider than just people who study at UWA.

Even if you don't have someone here you would like to invite to join us on Saturday the 6th of October from 12.30pm to 3.00pm, please come along. The postgraduates at UWA are a family too, and the PSA wants to spend a sunny (fingers crossed!) Saturday afternoon with as many of our family as we can!

We'll have a free barbeque and free entertainment from a native animal petting zoo, and you're welcome to bring along any other picnic food you'd like, blankets, chairs etc.
For catering purposes, please RSVP to Aisling on psa@guild.uwa.edu.au by the 2nd of October.

It's important to have the special people in your life around you - and this is a great chance to show these people that they're important to you and the University that you are investing so much in, before you graduate!
Totally made this poster for you.

Important! Edition: Newsletter 22nd September 2012

Important! Edition

What’s up posties!

So you’ll note that this edition is not coming out on Wednesday! I’ve been working at getting a couple of things confirmed, and please make sure you read this one because there is some very important info!
First things first: I am very pleased to officially open all positions on the 2013 PSA Committee for nomination. I have created a set of handy informative web pages just for you! Please have a look through them, and ask me any questions not already answered there. http://www.psa.guild.uwa.edu.au/elections_for_2013

AGM: Our annual general meeting will take place on the 26th of October from 5.30pm in Arts Lecture Room 5. The election will take place at the meeting, so it’s important that you come! You will also be treated to a super bubbly report from me, a super informative report from Treasurer Brock, and any other business for the Association will be addressed – if you want to bring amendments to the Constitution you need to get seven PSA members together to present them to the PSA Committee.
Is this all sounding terribly dull? Here’s the fun part – come to the AGM, stay for the whole thing, join us for a sundowner! Venue to be confirmed, but likely the University Club.

Other fun things!

The Family Picnic has come together very nicely! The details are on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/events/408035109259142/). The 6th of October from 12.30pm to 3.00pm on the Oak Lawn is when and where we’ll see you – we’re providing a sausage sizzle with vegetarian, beef and chicken (both halal) sausages, fizzy drinks, and native animals (including a koala!).
You need to RSVP so that we can make sure there is enough food for everyone! Send me an email with how many people are coming, and dietary requirements by October 2nd – we’re welcoming all family, so bring parents, partners, children – our just bring your lovely self and party with your postgrad family!

We have Connect on the 4th of October from 5pm!

The PSA are co-sponsoring a performance of The Vagina Monologues on campus – on the 4th of October at 7.30pm. Tickets are $10 – so head along, support the PSA and see a fabulous piece of theatre! (go to Connect first!)

Finally – this is the absolute last call for The Employable Postgraduate seminars – if you want to come, email me by 5pm Monday! Places are strictly limited now!
I’ve kept this super short so that hopefully most people read the whole thing! Have a fantastic weekend postgrads, I look forward to seeing you soon – unfortunately I’ll be away from the 3rd October to the 12th at a conference, but take heaps of photos of the upcoming events for me!

Newsletter 12th September 2012

Hi there posties!

As usual, you can read the high-definition, director’s cut, as-she-originally-intended version of the newsletter on the blog at... here, silly.

The Employable Postgraduate: How to prepare for your future career during your candidature” seminar series is filling up fast! Thank you so much for your support, I’m really glad that this is useful to you. Please make sure to look at the three seminars and RSVP to me at psa@guild.uwa.edu.au to reserve your spot!

Even if you can’t make it to these seminars, but wish you could – email me! That way I can compile a list of people to get in touch with when we (hopefully!) decide to repeat this series.

Family Picnic: If I don’t get more response to this idea, I think we might have to cancel it (which I would hate to do!). So, if you’d be keen to bring your significant other/parents/children to uni on a Saturday for a free BBQ and some fun (campus tours/face painting/music/snake petting[ed: nothing suss]) please let me know!

Important dates for you to block out in your calendar (more info to come!):
AGM: Friday the 26th of October, 5pm
Cocktail Party: Friday the 2nd of November

And a reminder: Do you know an amazing postgrad? Someone who studies hard, but continues to give back to their community – through volunteering, leadership, or cutting oranges for their local sports team? We have an award for that! Nominate them to be the inaugural winner, and see the terms and conditions on the website: http://sponsored.uwa.edu.au/psa/leadership

Best,
Aisling

Spring into Spring!: Newsletter 5th September 2012

Spring into Spring Issue!

Hi postgrads!

Oh my goodness, it’s September! (This is a truly terrifying prospect for me.)

This image does not belong to PSA. It's by Edvard Munch! Get some culture please.
So, what’s happening around the PSA corridor this month? Most excitingly, as part of our responsibilities to help you with career development, we’re running a seminar series entitled “The Employable Postgraduate: How to prepare for your future career during your candidature”. More detail are below, but please please please look carefully at the information and RSVP to me. Your support for these kind of events ensures that they continue!

Also, the committee would like to create a set of FAQs on the website, and we want to know what your questions were when you started. There is a poll on the Facebook page, with some initial suggestions, or you can add your own – I’d be so appreciative if you would! http://www.facebook.com/uwapsa

We’re planning to hold a Family Picnic on Saturday the 6th of October (daytime)! We’ll be inviting you to bring partners, spouses, children, parents, friends – whoever you consider family! What I need to know is – who would you like to bring and what would you like us to do? We’re locking in a BBQ, but I’m also hoping to provide some entertainment and want to make sure it is age appropriate! Please let me know! If there will be sufficient children, I’m thinking face painting and balloon animals. So please give me the excuse to get some balloon animals, because I love those things!

Now you’ve probably noticed Guild elections taking place and I encourage you to participate in this process. I know many postgrads feel disenfranchised by the Guild as an institution, but I believe that this can only be overcome by us becoming more involved in the process. So ask them questions, hold them accountable, and vote! Additionally, we will be holding elections for our committee and representatives at the AGM in October. Start thinking about the committee positions, and how you might contribute – I’m happy to meet with you and answer any questions you might have!

Important dates for you to block out in your calendar (more info to come!):
AGM: Friday the 26th of October
Cocktail Party: Friday the 2nd of November

Finally – Connect is on Thursday the 6th of September at 5pm!! I’ll see you soon, you fabulous amazing people!

Best,
Aisling
