Newsletter 8th of November 2012

Hi postgrads!

The Cocktail Party was a great success! Thanks so much to everyone who came and helped make it a great night – you all looked beautiful! A final special thanks to Brock for all his work in organising the night!

There are lots of photos up on the Facebook page:
Cocktail Party:

There are still some positions open on the 2013 committee, so if you’ve got the desire to volunteer and a passion for postgraduates, shoot me an email!
New members welcome for:
Coursework Officer
Indigenous Officer
Education Fac Rep
Law Fac Rep
Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Science Face Rep
All 2013 positions commence on the 1st of December.

Do you have feedback on the PSA in 2012? Email it to, and maybe things will be better/different/cooler for you taking the time to do so!

I’m so pleased to say that we sent Postscript to the printer today! A teeny tiny bit behind schedule, but well worth the time and effort in reading it. A huge thanks to Ashleigh Prosser for editing, collating, and liaising, and to Patricia Alessi for kick starting the project.

Finally – AWARD AND GRANT APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY 5pm FRIDAY. The PSA Office won’t be attended during the day (I’m at the IAS ‘Day of Ideas’), but I will be back before 5pm to clear out the pigeonhole – so don’t be late!

Drop your applications in to Guild Student Reception on the ground floor of the Guild Village, and give the lovely reception girls a smile.

3 newsletters left from me dearlings, then I’m back to writing my thesis. It’s a little less chirpy than these newsletters.

Check your student email!! Your student email is where the GRS communicates with you – regardless of if you have a staff account, or still use the same Hotmail account you set up when you were 12 years old. Check that and StudentConnect at least once a week to ensure that you don’t have any outstanding fines, fees, milestones which might lead to an encumbrance – this would prevent the automatic re-enrollment of research students! Bad times for everyone.
TL;DR – don’t start whinging at Gemma if you’re not re-enrolled, check your student email now.

Inter-Uni Summer School! This just sounds cool. In February 2013, the 5 WA unis are co-hosting a series of guest lectures, workshops, and networking events which aim to promote high-quality inter-disciplinary workshops. Sound cool? There is a flyer attached to this email, and on the website!

Go8-C9 Student Leadership in International Cooperation (SLIC) Project: The SLIC Project will support two PhD candidates from The university of Western Australia to undertake a two-week visit to a number of C9 universities in China during early-mid 2013. The program will provide $5000 to support each student for the cost of visiting the C9 universities, which may include airfares, accommodation or other costs associated with the visit. Students interested in participating in this project should complete the attached application form and return it to Dr Michael Azariadis by 5pm Monday 12th November. More info on the PSA website:
