Newsletter 6th of March 2013


Ahoy there Postgrads!

First of all I hope that you have all blanked out tomorrow (Thursday 7th of March) between 5-6pm to come to the Uni Club for Connect. Free drinks and snacks, meeting fellow postgrads, how could you say no? This month I will be there, meeting you all, shaking some hands, selling some PSA t-shirts, giving out PSA stickers, hopefully not kissing babies.....that would be weird.

In other PSA news (because we have a bit), Round 1 of PSA awards and grants are open. Please read the guidelines, and fill in the forms carefully when you apply because failure to fulfil any of the guidelines will mean that you application will be immediately rejected. This is very hard lined, but we need the application to be uniform and therefore can't bend the rules for one application and not another. The PSA is co-hosting a Professional Development Seminar with the Office of Industry and Innovation. The Seminar will be held on the 20th of March from 9am and run for around 2 hours. The venue is E Moot Court near the Law Library.
This seminar is designed to be an introduction to the concepts of intellectual property and commercialisation. It will look generally at these two concepts, and then consider them in the specific context of the University of Western Australia. Particular case studies will also be explored to see how different commercialisation models have been used, and what types of intellectual property were involved. The seminar is designed to be for people from all faculties from  Arts and Business to Engineering and Science.
The seminar includes morning tea and a light lunch so please RSVP, for catering purposes, to psa@guild.uwa.edu.au before the 13th of March with the subject line 'PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT' if you are interested.

The PSA is also running a 'Discussion Forum' on March 19th between 12 and 1pm in the PSA Lounge. We have invited along Student Assist Officers, as well as some Graduate Education Officers and want you to all come along to tell them your problems (and hopefully get some solutions). This month's topic will be 'Postgraduate Services - What's on Offer and What can I take Advantage of?'
We are trialing these out this year, so are going to be inviting a postgraduate relevant service to come and hang out in the PSA Lounge for an hour over lunch once a month- so that if anyone has any issues relevant to that service they can come, talk to fellow postgrads that might be experiencing the same issues and get some solutions from campus services. For the first forum we will be providing a light lunch- so again please RSVP to psa@guild.uwa.edu.au by March the 16th for catering purposes with the subject line 'FORUM DISCUSSION'.

Finally our International Officer (Jenny) is organising a group celebrate Holi (29th of March) together this year at Beaton Park. For those of you that don't know Holi is an Indian festival which celebrates the beginning of a new season. If you are interested in going along please email Jenny 21061868@student.uwa.edu.au.

Holi
Come and celebrate Holi 2013 with Friends!
Date:       29 March 2013, Good Friday
Time:       11am-4pm
Location: Beaton Park, Esplanade, Dalkeith 6009 (next to Tawarri Reception Centre, which is at the end of the road Esplanade.)

Meeting place: 1pm, at the area between the playground, the grey electricity box and the parking lot of the park.

Public Transport: Bus No.24 (goes to Claremont), get off at Bruce St / The Avenue (Stop No: 17600).

This is a Colourful Indian festival to celebrate the beginning of a new season and good harvests. It is celebrated by people throwing colourful scented powder at each other. Bring your picnic rugs, lunch, water pistols, buckets and enjoy the music, fun games and celebrations.
Colours, sweets and soft drinks are available on donation.
All are welcome to this Smoke & Alcohol free family event.

Wanted: a diverse cohort of PhD students - domestic and international, different stage of PhD, varying age groups, gender and research discipline - to explore 'what the lived experience' of a PhD student in present day Australia actually is.

Teaching:
Presentation Title: 'Online teaching and workload'
Date: Thursday 11 April 2013
Time: 10am - 1pm
Venue: Watersports Complex, UWA Crawley Campus

This seminar will present the results of an ALTC/OLT-funded project into the workload implications of blended and online teaching.

The research involved interviews with 88 staff, reporting on their perceptions of the disparity between workload allocations for teaching, and the actual 'lived reality' of the additional work, and changes in teaching tasks and activities, consequent on greater use of Learning Management Systems and student expectations of a 24/7 'service' education.
Presenter: Professor Yoni Ryan, Adjunct Professor of Higher Education at QUT.

Limina Conference 2013
Exclusivity: Boundaries of Difference

The Limina Conference will be held on Friday June 14, 2013 at the University of Western Australia. This conference will explore notions of exclusivity with Professor Jane Lydon, Future Fellow at the University of Western Australia, as keynote speaker. The conference aims to foster a supportive environment in which current post-graduates and early career researchers can present their own research whilst investigating the complexities of exclusion.
